How to learn yoga breathing?
Since the nineteenth century, one of the most important consequences of the accelerated globalization of human relationships has been the ever-increasing spread of ideas from one end of the world to the other. One of the most fascinating examples of relaxation exercises is the spread of concepts related to Indian spirituality and philosophy throughout Europe and, beyond, the whole world. Among these practices, the most popular is undoubtedly that of Yoga, a school whose success is not denied. At the forefront of these, we find the possibility to improve its breathing. Yoga for breathing, what is it?
While this movement often originated in the West and spread to the rest of the world, the flow of influences reverses many times. As we have already mentioned, Yoga is one of the schools of philosophy that emerged in ancient India several millennia ago. However, while this tradition has its own written body of work, theory is less important than in some of its sister traditions.
Here, it is above all the daily exercises that should lead the disciple to a higher state of well-being, also known as Samadhi. The ultimate goal of yoga is to achieve liberation of the mind, a process called Mokshaand which aims to allow its beneficiary to no longer be limited by his body envelope. To achieve this goal, there are a large number of approaches and techniques, organized according to a precise hierarchy, which one climbs as one approaches the desired state.
After Asana, which is a set of postures designed to ensure that the subject’s body is supple and well maintained, one of the most important steps is that of Pranayama. This is what we are interested in today.
The controlled breathing, pillar of the blooming in Yoga
Pranayama consists in fact in a series of exercises which should help to control one’s breath. The most basic one simply involves paying attention to your breathing. Taking a few minutes to breathe through the nose, paying attention to the rhythm of the inhalations and exhalations, measuring it and noting its evolution over time, these are the tools on which one should rely to start his exercises:
- Inspiration or retention of the pulmonary respiration ;
- Deep exhalation.
One of the most common practices is to breathe in through only one nostril. After blocking one nostril, one inhales deeply until one feels the air reaching the bottom of one’s chest. Then slowly close the second nostril and, after a short time, breathe out through the nostril that was closed first, before breathing in through it and out through the other nostril. repeat the process. One can also think of holding one’s breath for long seconds, thus developing one’s lung capacity over the course of the sessions and breathing better over time.

It goes without saying that these practices cannot exist in a vacuum: they must be permanently accompanied by other exercises, starting with those of Asana which often precede those of Pranayama. It is a complete way of life that is offered by Yoga and which, if adopted with seriousness and discipline, can allow for a much better to face a world sometimes so distressing that it does not let us breathe anymore !
